Wireless WiFi Hotspots and Internet Access Setup

Multiple users who have a wireless enabled device like a laptop or PDA and are within range of the network's broadcast signal can share a cable or DSL broadband connection to get online at the same time.

A Hotspot is created by setting up a wireless network, commonly called Wi-Fi, that uses 802.11 technology. HotSpots, whether free or paid, are a way to get people online and in many cases are a way to get people into your business.

Hotel rooms and public areas, airports, restaurants, coffeeshops, libraries, waiting rooms, bookstores, bed and breakfasts, laundromats, RV Parks, marinas and hospitals are just some of the locations where you'll find public access Hot Spots.

802.11 technology uses unlicensed frequencies and produces throughput up to 125 Mbps. If your users are expected to check email and generally perform routine net crusing it should not be a problem. For telephone calls using VoIP some system degredation will take place if more than 10 people are using the same router. One person downloading a video can effect your network, so plan ahead to determine the type of head end feed that best suits your needs. Sharing one home-quality DSL line may not be sufficient.

Many major WiFi hotspot contracts benefit you, the customer. Barnes and Knoble, McDonalds and many others have free wireless internet access. Just request your free code or look near the door at Barnes and Knoble for the basic code.

If your wireless laptop computer is set to use a specific SSID code remove that setting before trying to connect. Once you are connected you can use a VoIP phone as if you were at home or in the office. VoIP follows you, or more accurately it knows where your active internet connection is.
