Pre-Configured Free SIP phones for Easy Installation on Windows or Linux - Unix

Preconfigured phones take the guess work out of talking over the Internet. Preconfigured phones are available for Windows and Linux. In most cases you download the application and create an account.

The main difference, which is noted by our editors, involves the length of the phone numbers associated with certain applications. If you tell someone your number is 12345, for instance, they do not recognize it as a telephone number unless you explain it further.

For services such as Stanaphone and GloPhone, you receive a real phone number which consists of a United States area code followed by a seven digit number. For instance our Stanaphone number is 646.225.5225, which requires no additional instructions. We see the market dividing on this issue as providers try to make a profit. For instance Stanaphone lets anyone call you on your VON (voice over the net) phone. Others may restrict access unless the caller is calling from another VON phone from the same service provider. Read the fine print for details of all accounts before chosing a provider.

Some proprietory providers such as Skype claim their applications will always be free, but some services require a paid subscription. Some providers offer video phones but require higher bandwidth and a broadband connection.

If you are confused about which preconfigured service to use for Windows try Stanaphone or GloPhone for ease of use and functionality. Here too our editors saw a difference. Stanaphone lets you create an account and you can fund it later by credit card. GloPhone asks you to make the decision up front. Other services will be studied and reported on as time permits.
