Net2Phone has been around for years and was one of the original pioneers of voice over the Internet. Net2Phone, IBM Bamba Phone, and a few others were perfecting the art of communicating from one PC to another.

Although it is not free we discuss Net2Phone because they talk about fax capabilities in their CommCenter offering. The link opens in a new window. They display their rate chart for paid calls, and by now you should have an idea of how VoIP products are competing on low per-minute rates. Buying in bulk, and often providing other services, VoIP and broadband providers can buy a minute of talk time for less than one-tenth of a cent.

Net2Phone offers pc-to-pc calls, pc-to-fax, pc-to-phone and instant messenging. Not the only provider in the field with this offering, sound quality and low per-minute rates must be considered. Live Phone tests free Internet telephones only and has not tested Net2Phone.

If social networking is important to you and Net2Phone's fax capability appeals to you it may be worth a try. This is a software application. A quick look at the Net2Phone website shows that they also offer broadband telephone service and free telephone adapters for some customers.

BE AWARE: Net2Phone deserves to have "fallen on hard times", as recently reported, because some key decision makers in the company lack integrity. When Net2Phone boldly proclaims 'No Spyware, no adware' on it's website and then installs BargainBuddy as part of its Comm Center (without giving the end-user any notice in the license agreement), a question of credibility arises. Comm Center 2.1 won't work if the spyware is removed/disabled either so the only choice left is to permanently uninstall the program.

About Bargain Buddy: Bargain Buddy is a downloaded 'helper' addition for Internet Explorer and installs directly on your web browser. It monitors the terms that you enter into the search bar for matches to a keyword list of advertisers. When a match is found it displays an ad to the end user over and above any advertising the site itself may carry. This program is also able to monitor the originating servers for updates to software, keywords and advertisers.

When AT&T paid an estimated $1.4 billion for a 32-percent stake in telephony pioneer Net2Phone, many bought into the hype that traditional PSTNs voice systems would be replaced altogether by SIP driven VoIP services using the Internet as primary transport.
