Topic Title: MyPhone IP to Voip Connections are Clear Net Voice
We tested version 0.12b of the MyPhone software on the LAN. It is freeware and functions well. This is a Sourceforge project under development.
If you know the public IP address of your friend's computer just enter it to call them over the Internet and talk directly to them. MyPhone says it does not need a SIP server or any intermediary, and they are correct.
In testing the software we found an additional bonus when using it in our offices on the LAN. MyPhone will connect easily, directly through the router, to full blown VoIP packages listening for calls. We were able to talk to our Stanaphone and GloPhone terminals without a problem. Audio was clear and it did not tie up our regular SIP phones.
MyPhone has H323 Gatekeepers support and can transmit voice even through low bandwidth modem lines. It is free but the authors site allows for donations, although not required but worthy of mention. MyPhone's stringtable is available for download. You can translate it to your language and sent it back to the author for inclusion in the next version of the software.
MyPhone is available as a free download from Source Forge which is accessed here. This link opens in a new window so you will not lose your place.
Be aware that the software does not touch the Windows XP firewall until you make your first call to an IP address. Only when pressing the call button for the first time will the XP firewall ask you if you want to unblock the firewall for the program. It was not a problem at all. In our test we went out through the firewall after unblocking, through the router, and interfaced with Stanaphone on port 5060 automatically.
Their website says MyPhone is compatible with NetMeeting, GnomeMeeting and many other H323-based software and hardware.
Similar to early Ip to IP - computer to computer - offerings this program is similar to Pico Phone and Bamba Phone. It is in the early stages of development but works well and is worthy of a look.
