Topic Title: Express Talk Multiple VoIP Service Provider Setup

Express Talk Multi-line VoIP application - a step by step example.

Express Talk is a VoIP softphone that allows you to talk from your PC to any other PC with a softphone. It uses the SIP protocol and is compatible with most major VoIP SIP service providers. Since Express Talk has four lines we though we should put it to the test. As our primary goal we wanted each line to connect to a different VoIP service provider. Secondly, we wanted telephone numbers from around the world. Third, we wanted more than one telephone number to ring on the same line, as in a UK telephone number forwarded to a US number. And forth and lastly, we wanted to configure all of this while running an ATA adapter and a cordless VoIP phone on the network at the same time. Did it work? Smoothly and without problems. Here is how it is done.

The Express Talk website is here and this link opens in a new window. Their website offers a freeware version of Express Talk, general business audio software, dictation and transcription software, radio station software, audio software for schools and much more. You can see their listing in various categories on VoipTips.org This is the setup we used for four VoIP providers on one softphone

server - proxy and domain - proxy01.sipphone.com

Line1 is Inphonex, Line 2 is Free World Dialup, Line 3 is Voipuser.org, Line 4 is Sipphone - Gizmo Project

Main configuration is as follows:
Local SIP port to listen on - 5061
External RTP port starting from - 8001

An alternate configuration is 5060 and 8000

Use stun servers = yes, servers are stun.fwdnet.net:3478 and stun.voipuser.org

Here is what the ports actually do for us, as in RTP and local SIP on port 5060. Port 5060 signals that the software is alive and residing on your computer, or a telephone or ATA adapter is alive and residing on the network. RTP is what actually carries the voice. We never touched our router to make all of this work together. Our Windows XP firewall was told to give Express Talk full access to the Internet.

Now your configuration becomes more interesting with an international VoIP addition or two. We needed to add UK telephone numbers to our configuration. Here is how to do it. Go to www.voipuser.org , create an account, and log in. Select "My PSTN Inbound Numbers", then get a UK telephone number that can be called by any regular telephone, especially in the UK. As well as being able to forward calls on these numbers to any SIP account, calls can also be forwarded to normal landlines or mobile phones depending on which prefix you choose. All of the above numbers can also be used with our fax to email service, available in your control panel once you choose a number type.

Our national rate number is 08700682490. It is configured through VoipUser.org to ring to Stanaphone during the day and Sipphone - Gizmo Project at night. Here is the configuration:
Current termination:
Primary +16462255225
Secondary SIP:17476130364@proxy01.sipphone.com

Click "My SIP Account"
Our local rate number is 08449864197
To dial us at VoIP User, a FreeWorldDialup user would dial : **448 08449864197
You can also dial allvoipsearch@voipuser.org

The page will offer you a signup, or will show "VoIP User Outbound Service" after which theoretically you can use this to call most landlines, anywhere in the World. Read their guidelines at http://www.voipuser.org/forum_view_14.html

In conclusion, we sucessfully subscribed to six VoIP providers and overlayed our UK telephone numbers to our US termination. VoIP telephone calls received in London are forwarded to New York, and then to our ATA adapter wheere we answer them with a standard cordless phone. All other calls are forwarded to Express Talk running on Windows XP. Any line could call any other line. All four lines can be active at the same time. Express talk is nice software with great functionality, and is proof that you are not limited to the softphone provided to you buy a VoIP provider.

Express Talk software is listed at VoipTips.org
