Obviously there is a need for standardization in the industry when it comes to phone numbers. Most people will abandon their funny looking number in favor of a number that can be called from any phone in the world, such as our Stanaphone number shown above.

As of the date this was published, we know of no centralized telephone directory of VoIP or VON (voice over the net) telephone numbers. Some attempts have been made, but none have taken off in popularity noe do they rival switchboard.com, a great telephone directory for conventional phones.

Telephone number portability, which we now have for cell phone numbers when you change cell providers, has not been addressed relative to Net phones. In other words, if you get a real phone number from a company like Stanaphone or Glophone, we are unclear about whether or not you can keep it.

Some providers are actually data or telco providers. The number you are given is from a block of unused numbers. Often a block will contain 1000 telephone numbers managed by the bulker, or available to a data center connected to the Internet. Unused bandwidth is known as dark fiber.

Long distance resellers often buy bulk blocks of numbers which come with a high speed package such as a T-1 package. Rather than letting the numbers go unused they provide Net Phone software while hoping you will pay two to four cents a minute to call someone from your computer.
