A Review of VOIP and Pulver Communicator
From the makers of Free World Dialup (FWD) the Pulver Communicator is somewhat similar to Skype. It combines voice, instant messenging, and social networking. Since the product does facilitate voice communication, Free World Dial up and contributions to the Internet voice community, we mention the product here.
Years ago Microsoft introduced Net Meeting, complete with collaborative white board and text chat. Pulver Communicator uses the term Social Networking, and also interfaces with instant messenging. It does support webcam video, where Skype does not. We concentrate on true VOIP and SIP where voice quality is not effected by other applications which require part of your processor power.
Pulver Communicator does interface with non-Sip-enabled people on your buddy list by sending a link to them. As long as the person is running Windows XP they can click the link and talk to you. We haven't tried it to verify effectiveness, but some FWD features along the same lines came with Windows Active X security issues. Hopefully these issues we resolved.
Social networking as defined by Pulver pertains to buddy lists similar to AOL Instant Messenger. Users of Pulver Communicator can opt to not share their personal contact information and thus set their own privacy tolerance.
We classify true VoIP and SIP applications as those which can be interfaced with your network using telephone adapters. Pulver Communicator does not meet this classification but it appears to be a great free download. You can get it here. The link will open in a new window.

"...the new battlelines are emerging in the communications war. The battle -- once waged between ILECs and CLECs, between cable and LEC, between wireline and wireless, between terrestrial and satellite -- has officially morphed into a battle between Internet Access Provider and Internet Application Provider."
