While SIPphone service is not totally free it is very inexpensive. SipPhone call quality was great when we tested it, even when calls came through another Sip software client such as Stanaphone and Glophone.
According to developers this is an all-in-one instant messenging and calling solution. They also say This long awaited piece of software brings Instant Messaging, Internet Calling and Windows together in a great package.
Pulver Communicator and Skype have the same theory, but our experience with clarity make SipPhone a product worth looking at if social networking is important to you. The PhoneGaim software must run on your computer so don't expect to use a USB or adapter driven hard phone unless you want SIP VoIP without instant messenging.

We classify true VoIP and SIP applications as those which can be interfaced with your network using telephone adapters. SipPhone does appear to meet this classification with some of their products and appears to be a great free download. Other products that use ATA adapters can also use sipPhone.
